Mindfulness Meditation Classes for Beginners
Join me on Mondays at 11:30 - 12:30 at my clinic in Stanwick, Northamptonshire for Mindfulness Meditation Classes for Beginners. These classes are ideal for people who are: interested in mindfulness, would like to learn more about the techniques and practice trying them in a relaxing and supportive environment.
Practicing Mindfulness helps us to live more in the here and now. All too often our thoughts get carried away with what is happening next or stuck in what happened yesterday that we forget to just experience the present moment. Mindfulness is about paying attention to these little moments and really enjoying them.
The evidence tells us that mindfulness is great for our mental health and emotional wellbeing. It can help us to reduce stress, and decrease depressive symptoms and anxiety, it helps us to regulate our emotions and increase self compassion. Mindfulness can also help to lower blood pressure, manage chronic pain, improve sleep and alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties. Whilst Mindfulness can have very positive results for our physical and mental health, these classes are an introduction to mindfulness, they are not therapy and should not be seen as a replacement for any type of treatment you may be having, including medication. Advice should always be obtained from your medical practitioner or consultant before making any changes to your treatment plan.
These are small classes with no more than 8 people to help you really get the most out of each session. I therefore need you to notify me if you wish to attend so I can make sure there is space for everyone. Come along, learn something new, and do something that will be good for you!
The Calm Club Relaxation classes for children aged 6 - 9
These group classes are suitable for children aged 6 – 9 years and they can be adapted to suit older children too, for example, older children who need help with managing exam stress. These classes incorporate mindfulness, Theraplay® activities and psychoeducation to encourage children and young people to develop positive connections within a group helping them to feel a sense of belonging, they also encourage a positive mindset and are designed to get children active in a fun way. All of these elements are proven to be beneficial to the mental health of children and young people by encouraging the release of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphins. These are all natures way of making us feel good.
These sessions are designed to be fun and informative. They will help children to develop positive social skills, it will help them to build resilience and they can learn coping mechanisms that will help them manage life challenges more readily. Each session will include a combination of the following:
- Learning about the brain and how and why it can make us think, feel and behave in certain ways that might not always be helpful for us.
- Positive mindset and reframing negative thoughts – using our superpowers
- Making our superpowers stronger by practicing mindfulness – including meditation suitable for children, and fun activities that incorporate using all our senses, using an anchor, breath work, and learning to experience our feelings within our bodies.
- Theraplay® activities, encouraging nurture and positive engagement between children.
- Therapeutic Storytelling, helping the children to use their own imaginations to be able to manage difficult feelings.
Practicing Mindfulness through these classes can help children to learn how to be non-judgemental and truly experience living in the moment. It will also help them to develop an understanding of how we all have an inner critic, but these are just thoughts and not facts. They will learn how we can challenge these thoughts to improve our confidence and self-esteem. Government research into Mindfulness practice in schools has demonstrated the benefits for children regarding self-regulation and difficult behaviour, including improvements for those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, as well as decreases in impulsiveness, aggression and oppositional behaviour. Incorporating Theraplay® activities provides opportunities for the children to also form positive connections with others whilst developing a sense of feeling safe and well cared for within the group.
These classes can be one off classes, introducing mindfulness and an understanding of how our brains work when we feel anxious, angry, very sad or scared. Or they can be run as a series of classes, resulting in more positive outcomes. I charge just £80 for each group class, if 6 classes are booked in advance then this is reduced to £70 per class.
